How to read the result

The curve shows how a characteristic is spread across a country's adult population. Tall parts of the curve are where most people sit; the thin tails are the unusually low and unusually high ends. Your marker sits at your own value, and the shaded area to its left is the share of the population at or below you.

A percentile is that shaded share expressed as a number. Landing at the 70th percentile means roughly 70% of adults are at or below you and 30% are above. The 50th percentile is the median — the exact middle of the population.

Why income and wealth look so lopsided

Height is spread symmetrically: about as many people are unusually tall as unusually short, and the average sits near the middle. Income and wealth are not like that. A small number of very large values pull the average well above the median, which is why the average earner in most countries is nearer the 65th percentile than the 50th. That asymmetry is real, and the curve is drawn on a logarithmic scale so the shape stays readable across the whole range.

It also means the average is a poor description of a typical person. Comparing yourself with the median is almost always more informative than comparing yourself with the mean.

How accurate is this?

It is an estimate, and it is worth understanding what kind. Statistical agencies publish summary figures — an average, a median, a Gini coefficient — rather than a full list of where every individual falls. This tool fits a standard distribution to those published summaries and reads your position off it. That works well near the middle of the range and becomes progressively rougher toward the extremes.

Height is the most reliable of the four, because human height genuinely follows a normal distribution very closely. Income and wealth depend on how well a lognormal curve matches the real distribution, which is good but imperfect at the very top.
